Events
This page is a souvenir album for photographs of events and social functions.
Most functions centred around education or fund-raising. For children, there was the annual Purim party, the demonstration Seder, the Chanukah parade and the decorating of the Sukkah. For adults, there was the annual fete, monthly card parties, anniversaries and house parties and an endless round of meetings that were also occasions for socialising. Many were attended by someone holding a camera.
If you happen to possess a photograph of any of these events, we would like to exhibit it here. It will take only a few minutes of your time to scan it on your home printer, to save it as a .jpg file and to attach it to an email sent to [email protected].

Off To The Beach: Girl modelling beach clothes during a fashion parade in 1960.
Notice the steps on the western side of the stage (bima) and the memorial windows in the background. The windows appear in shades of grey but were actually in pale shades of blue, red and yellow. Stained glass was beyond the community's means. The thick black lines at the foot of each window were glued-on plastic strips imprinted with the names of the departed and the names of the donors. Where were they stored after they came unglued?

Succot in the Mid 1970s: Children gathered beneath the Succah to listen to the address of the president, Dr Dov Dorfman, who is seen here holding the microphone. The woman in the centre is giving out prizes to the children. Readers are invited to identify her.
If you were present in the audience, can you identify yourself or pinpoint the position of the succah? It seems to have been built flush to an external wall.

A Twenty-First Birthday Party held in the synagogue in December 1959. The chairs have been removed to make way for tables, and the ark has been curtained off. Note the short staircase on the left leading up to the elevated platform from which the Torah was read during services. Note also the two small brass plaques honouring those who donated to its construction. The accordionist is actually sitting on the bima.
A Wedding: In the centre, Rev. Michael Mandel surrounded by the bridal party. In the background, a plaque honouring the foundation members of the Board of Management. The photograph was taken in the minister's office on 7th July, 1963.
