To what extent is the list authoritative ?:
1. The list is authoritative to the extent that it is based on the following sources:
a. Correspondence and conversations with former members, names of individuals mentioned in 'The Centre' and in the Jewish press and on personal recall.
b. The Card Index of Members for the years 1968 - 1978. This card index was maintained by the synagogue's treasurer for the purpose of monitoring moneys received for membership fees, seat rentals and various offerings. Scroll down to the foot of this page to see a typical card.
c. When the card index provides only the first letter of a member's given name, information drawn from the website of the 'Jewish Cemetery Rookwood' was used to determine the member's full name and its correct spelling.
2. It does not distinguish between 'financial members', their children, people who attended the synagogue without formally becoming members or people who were merely associated with the synagogue.
The List Is Incomplete Because:
1. It does not include everyone who was ever a member.
2. Some individuals are represented by an initial rather than their given name.
3. It does not provide dates of membership.
4. It may contain some duplicate entries.
Format:
1. Coloured backgrounds denote separate families.
2. Individuals who were minors during their original association with the synagogue are denoted by the titles 'Master' and 'Miss' even though their association with the synagogue may have continued into adult life.
3. Women who were minors during their original association with the synagogue and after marriage maintained their association are listed under their former family names.
4. Women who remarried after their original association with the synagogue and maintained their association are listed under their former family names.
5. N/A denotes 'Not Available' and constitutes an invitation to supply the missing information.

Typical Card:
Typical membership card from the treasurer's card index. Note the crossed out Strathfield address and the updated Eastern Suburbs address. Such updates can be seen on many of the cards. Many other cards carry the notation 'Deceased'. The card index thus attests to the synagogue's dwindling membership.
